CLIFOOD Block Seminar 3: Climate and Modeling

22-28 March 2018, University of Hohenheim

As part of the qualification program for the SDG Graduate School CLIFOOD, six Block Seminars are planned per generation of PhD Scholars between the Hawassa University (HU) in Ethiopia and the University of Hohenheim (UHOH).
The third Block Seminar of the CLIFOOD SDG Graduate School was held at the University of Hohenheim, Germany from March 22nd to 28th, 2018. During this seminar CLIFOOD scholars as well as young scientists and lecturers from HU and UHOH were trained.
The third Block Seminar focused on climate change aspects, crop, weather and climate modeling and consisted of the following lectures and workshops given by experts from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), National Meteorology Agency from Ethiopia, Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), UK Met Office, Ethiopian Institute of Agriculture and Research, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and professors from Hawassa University, University of Augsburg and University of Hohenheim:

1. Keynote: New developments in crop and land surface modeling
2. Specific aspects of crop modeling
3. Computer exercises: Crop modeling with Expert-N
4. Lecture and computer exercises on Land surface modeling
5. Modeling cereal yield gaps under variable climate: Implication for Food Security
6. Introduction and general aspects of weather modeling
7. Strengthening climate information and early warning systems for climate resilient and adaptation to climate change in Ethiopia
8. Challenges of hydrometeorological modelling in West Africa: From downscaling to decision support
9. Overview of the climate in Ethiopia and Climate Change trends
10. Introduction of weather and climate modeling
11. German Climate Forecast System and Seasonal Forecast
12. Access, interpretation and use of GCM forecast outputs as tools to strengthen climate services in East Africa: focus on seasonal timescales
13. Ensemble seasonal forecasts for the Horn of Africa: evaluation of the skill of high-resolution and convection-permitting simulations
14. Operation of weather and climate models/seasonal forecast system – Program VAPOR-3-D-visualization
15. Crop-climate modeling: A chain of evidences from Ethiopia

Some lectures were live streamed and could be followed on the face book page of the Food Security Center. The lecture given by Dr. Richard Graham from the UK Met Office, United Kingdom was held in the video conference format.During the block seminar the CLIFOOD (PhD and postdoc) scholars also had the opportunity to present and discuss their research projects and get the feedback from the colleagues, experts and subproject leaders.Besides the lectures and workshops, a field trip was part of the program. The participants visited the Katharinentaler Hof, where they learned about LI-COR Eddy Covariance Systems for Flux Measurements, the Maulbronn Monastery, the Hauff Museum of the prehistoric world and the Nature Conservation Center Schopfloch.
