World Food Day Colloquium 2018
Cooperatives: essential for food security?!

This year’s World Food Day Colloquium, organized by the Food Security Center (FSC) in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative Association/ Baden-Württembergischer Genossenschaftsverband (BWGV), focused on cooperatives and their contribution to global food security.
Over 250 participants joint the event to learn more about positive achievements and challenges cooperatives do have to face regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The World Food Day Colloquium offered a unique platform for international FSC-partners, invited stakeholders and scientists from Hohenheim to discuss institutional and political framework conditions as important prerequisites for the cooperatives’ success to improve the situation of global nutrition.
Invited experts from policy and business presented their perspective about cooperatives and their role in international development, shared best practice examples, outlined challenges and advanced approaches in cooperatives support and successful performance.
Particular resonance among Colloquium participants had the Memorial Lecture on ‘Rapid transformation of agrifood supply chains in Africa and Asia with implications of farming systems’ by Prof. Dr. Thomas Reardon, Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Recourse Economics, Michigan State University and AAEA Fellow.
The special occasion for this year’s WFDC was the 200th anniversary of the University of Hohenheim and the Raiffeisen Year 2018, in which the cooperative idea was celebrated on the occasion of the 200th birthday of its founder, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen.
An extra conference location for video-transmission was offered in Aula for those, who was less lucky to get a place at the center of action at the Balcony Hall of the Hohenheim Palace. Interested persons outside the University could follow the World Food Day Colloquium even from remote areas via the live stream on the FSC page on Facebook.
