World Food Day Colloquium 2019
„Food Security and Trade in a
Period of Change and Innovation”
Wednesday, October 16, 2019, Balcony Hall, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany
This year’s World Food Day Colloquium, organized by the Food Security Center (FSC) focused on trade. On the one hand, global trade with agricultural and food products offers a huge potential for contributing to food security, for example by enabling the provision of diverse food sources. On the other hand, trade may also jeopardize local and regional agricultural markets and producers, especially in developing countries. Further, the carbon footprint of food products and, thus, the impact on climate change, but also food scandals have increased the awareness to focus again more on local and regional products. This might be true for developed countries, but how can local/regional trade in developing countries become strengthened? Can the complexity of trade, climate change, and food security become a sustainable system?
The World Food Day Colloquium offered a unique platform for international FSC-partners, invited stakeholders and scientists from Hohenheim who are actively involved in answering these questions to present their perspectives, discuss and exchange their achievements at the World Food Day Colloquium 2019 (#wfdc2019).
Young scientists from developing countries and funded by FSC gave insights into their research. The World Food Day Colloquium 2019 ended with a panel discussion during which experts debated the specific roles of trade with agricultural and food products on global food security.
As a special highlight, the “Justus von Liebig Award for World Nutrition 2019” was granted by the Foundation fiat panis.
Video-transmission was offered in Aula for those, who was less lucky to get a place at the center of action at the Balcony Hall of the Hohenheim Palace. Interested persons outside the University could follow the World Food Day Colloquium even from remote areas via the live stream on the FSC page on Facebook.
